Transportation Information
Bus service is provided to children in grades K-5 for eligible students only. For all bus questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Theresa Policastro at (718) 232-3873 extension 4511 or by email at tpolicastro@schools.nyc.gov.
For the safety of all students the NYC Department of Education will not allow ineligible students to ride the school bus. Please refer to the following link for the Office of Pupil Transportation as they determine eligibility. http://www.optnyc.org/ServicesAndEligibility/getransportation.htm
All students riding the yellow school bus should have a bus tag attached to his/her book bag, and that tag should reflect the student’s name, class and bus stop. No student is permitted to ride the school bus unless there is a completed bus form on file. Attendance is taken during bus dismissal every afternoon.
A student’s bus stop is determined by the home address of the student on file. Parents are encouraged to contact the bus company directly when they are concerned about a delay or status. Please have your child’s bus number available.
Safety Tips For Students Riding a Bus
- Get to the bus stop at least ten minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
- When the bus approaches, stand at least three giant steps (6 feet) away from the curb, and line up away from the street.
- Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says that it's okay before stepping onto the bus.
- If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least five giant steps (10 feet) ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure that the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver.
- Use the handrails to avoid falls. When exiting the bus, be careful that clothing with drawstrings, and book bags with straps don't get caught in the handrails or doors.
- Never walk behind the bus.
- After you get off the bus, walk at least three giant steps away from the side of the bus.
- If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to pick it up because the driver may not be able to see you.
- Students can only board/disembark the bus at their designated stop.
- On the bus, children should talk quietly, be courteous to the driver and follow the driver's instructions. They should stay seated during the entire bus ride and keep the aisles clear.
