Monthly News 2021-2022
February 4, 2022
Dear PS 48 Mapleton Families,
Please be reminded that the school day starts at 8:30 AM when the doors open. Effective Monday, February 7th, students who arrive after 8:35 will have to enter through the main entrance to receive a late pass. That late pass means they will be marked late on their official attendance record. We appreciate your collaboration in ensuring our students are receiving their full instructional day without disruption.
Thank you,
Colleen Hogan
Principal

Family Letter - December, 2021
Dear PS 48 Mapleton Families,
As we approach the end of 2021, I would like to wish you all happiness and good health. It has been a pleasure getting to know the P.S. 48 Community. It is a special place to be a part of! Please see below for a few important updates and reminders.
Report Cards:
Report cards will be sent home on Friday, December 17th. Please review your child’s grades and feedback provided by their teachers and send it back to school signed. You can also access a copy on your NYC Schools Account. If you have any questions, teachers are available during Family Engagement time on Mondays at 8:00 or a mutually agreed upon time. You can contact them through the Remind App or leave a message with the main office at 718-232-3873.
Winter Break:
Schools will be closed December 24, 2021-January 2, 2021 for winter break. Teachers will be sending home a homework assignment for the vacation. We recognize many families celebrate holidays over this break and have come to a decision to respect that.
Celebrating Holidays:
We have a school community filled with a variety of cultures and traditions. It’s important that we celebrate and honor all cultures in our building. It provides students with new perspectives and experiences and gives teachers and paraprofessionals deeper insight into what matters to individual students. Attached is a short survey for you to complete about the way your family celebrates winter holidays. Our student is planning a Family Night in January to honor the various traditions our community celebrates. We’d appreciate it if you would fill it out and return it to your child’s teacher so we can use the information to plan and include everyone.
Math Instruction:
We have received feedback from families, students, and teachers that they would like to revise our approach to math instruction so that students can master skills and understand concepts that are on grade level. As a result, you may not see your child’s workbook completed every day. This does not mean there is math is not happening in class. Students will have multiple ways to apply their math learning and it will not always be in the workbook. It might be a project, collaborative group work, manipulative based, or a combination of many tasks. Do not hesitate to reach out to Parent Coordinator, Judy Magenta if you have any questions or concerns. Our January Coffee and Chat with Ms. Hogan will focus on feedback from families about the math curriculum we use at P.S. 48.
Enjoy your time with family and friends during the winter break. We look forward to hearing about our learners’ time off when we return in January.
Best,
Colleen Hogan
Family Letter - November 5, 2021
Dear PS 48 Mapleton Families,
Our 7-week Homecoming celebration is coming to an end. We have spent time sharing our likes, dislikes, passions, interests, our families, and cultures. We have learned about the history of P.S. 48 and celebrated friendships, teams, and community. We even selected a new P.S. 48 Mascot: the dragon! Students and families will continue to be celebrated throughout the school year and beyond. It’s been so wonderful seeing the smiles in their eyes.
Please see below for a few updates as we move into November:
Vaccine Pop Up Site:
Children ages 5-11 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The DOE is hosting Pop Up Vaccine sites at all elementary schools starting next week. Ours will be Monday, November 8th from 12:30 pm- 4:00 pm. If you choose to have your child vaccinated at the pop up site, a parent/guardian must be present or verbal or written consent must be provided by an adult designee. Please call 718-232-3873 if you have any questions about having your child vaccinated at the DOE Pop Up Site. This is entirely optional and no child will receive the vaccine without you present or your consent.
PTA Meeting:
Our November PTA Meeting will be held on Friday, November 12th at 9:00 am in the school yard (weather permitting). We will be voting on our Title 1 Parent Advisory Committee. If you are interested in having a voice in school wide spending with Title 1 funds, you should consider running for one of the positions.
Outdoor Learning Space:
We currently have an outdoor space that is not being fully utilized on the veranda. Students have shared ideas for reimagining that space. We’d like to hear from you as well. What kind of outdoor learning space would you like to have at P.S. 48? Please share any ideas with Parent Coordinator, Judy Magenta.
Coffee and Chat with Ms. Hogan:
This month’s Coffee and Chat will be held on Tuesday, November 30th. We will share the school’s updated vision for learning to get your feedback and hear any ideas you have for our outdoor learning spaces.
Canned Food Drive:
Students have been bringing in many canned goods to contribute to our food drive. The last day is November 8th. The class with the most cans will get a pizza party. The grade with the most cans will get an extra recess period.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I wish you all a happy, healthy holiday. I am grateful to be part of the wonderful community that is P.S. 48 Mapleton.
Best, Colleen

Family Letter - September 14, 2021
Dear Mapleton Families,
What a great first day back to school! Students were excited to see one another and their teachers, some for the first time in 18 months.
Health Screening:
Students must have a completed health screening each day to enter the building. It would be greatly appreciated if you could do these before coming to school in the morning to allow for a smooth transition into the building. You can do them on your phone by going to https://healthscreening.schools.nyc or scanning the QR code on the bottom of this letter. If you would like paper copies, please let your child's teacher or Parent Coordinator Judy Magenta know and we will provide them.
Consent Forms:
You should have received 2 Emergency Blue Cards, a Photo Consent Form, and a Consent to Walk Home Alone Form (Grade 4 and 5 only). Please complete and return these forms as soon as possible. There is also an optional Covid Testing Consent Form. You can consent for testing through your MySchools account or using the paper copy.
5th Grade Pictures:
5th Grade Graduation Pictures will be on Friday morning in the schoolyard. A flyer was sent home with additional infromation.
Remind:
Teachers will be sending connection requests for the Remind App. It will be a tool used to increase communication. Please accept the request to connect. We will be sharing pictures and other pertinent information.
Homecoming Week 1:
This week our theme is identity of self. We look forward to knowing each child individually. It is important to know their passions, interests, likes, and dislikes when planning for instruction that is specific to their needs.
Open School:
We will be hosting a remote Open School session for each class in the next two weeks. You will have a chance to meet your child's teacher, hear about the curriculum and expectations of that grade, get a virtual tour of the classroom, and ask questions.
- Kindergarten and 1st Grade on September 20th
- Pre-K and 2nd Grade on September 23rd
- 3rd Grade and 5th Grade on September 27th
- 4th Grade on September 29th
Your child's teacher will be sending home information with the time and link for your meeting.
Visitor Policy:
Effective last week, the DOE has announce that visitors must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the building with the exception of registration or a medical/crisis emergency.
Please continue to check our website at ps48mapletonschool.org and follow me on Twitter and Instagram @mshoganps48.
